About Sohar

Sohar is a city located in the Al Batinah Region of the Sultanate of Oman, approximately 240 kilometers north-west of the capital Muscat. Sohar was previously known as the ancient capital of Oman, and is the home city of Sidbad the Sailor. It has a rich sailing and fishing history.

The coastal city of Sohar was once an important Islamic port and the largest town in the country. Nowadays, Sohar has a new port under construction.

The Sohar fort is one of the most prominent features in the city of Sohar and was built between the 13th and 14th century AD by the 'Emirs of Hormuz'.
